July Writing Prompt

Posted on

Hello from the craziness that is July-Camp-Nano!
Please forgive any spelling errors, I am trying not to let the inner editor out 🙂

Kotor Bay, Montenegro

Kotor Bay, Montenegro

A line: “There was nothing really noble about questing, when you got right down to it. After all, the only reason they were out here saving the world in the first place was because they didn’t trust anyone else to do it right.”

And finally… Um… Another line because I said so.
“If you say ‘it could always be worse’ I will kill you.”

Have fun!
Lady Talia (who is not technically behind on wordcount, just behind the wordcount she wants.)

Firstly welcome to all of our new members!

Window Bed Snow Lady freeimage

I don’t know where I found the first one but the second is from the goodfone website.

And a line: On my mirror, written in some red, wet substance was the ominous message: “Make Me Pie.”

Finally in honor of our new Science Fiction writers,
What is the coolest modern invention your character can think of? (Or if you aren’t writing sci-fi what magical item?)

As always try to get at least 500 words for a decent attempt, and if your really want a challenge try incorporating all of them into one prompt!

Have fun and keep writing!

May Writing Prompt

Greetings all,
and a special welcome back to one of our gracious Co-Founders just back from her exciting honeymoon in China!!!

DSCF0668 Panjin Red Beach, China

The first of these pictures was actually taken by myself at a certain totally secret location (which may or may not have been taken on a rather momentous occasion and one of the most enjoyable events of the type I think I have ever been to)
The second is Panjin Red Beach in China.

To go with or alternative to this month’s pictures we have a word list:

  • Ride
  • Reason
  • Listen
  • Answer
  • Start
  • Wait
  • Sick
  • Think
  • Popular
  • Few

(Just a reminder the aim with a word list is to try to use all of the words in your response)

Finally, in case none of that has sparked your interest a line:
“You learn more if you don’t knock.”

As always try to get at least 500 words for a decent attempt, and if your really want a challenge try incorporating all of them into one prompt!

Have fun and keep writing!

April 2014 Writing Prompt

Posted on Updated on

Once again we have had a marvelous meeting so now I challenge you to stretch those writing muscles!

The Maunsell Sea Forts, England Twins or Lovers freeimage

I don’t remember where I found the first image but it is of the Maunsell Sea Forts, England. The second image is a free one from the Goodfon website.

To go with these we have a phrase:
“I’d like to see a problem that can’t be solved with explosives.”

Finally to go with the vaguely post-apocalyptic feel that I seem to be getting here, has there been a massive natural disaster in your world? What was it? How did your character (or their ancestors) survive?

As always 500 words + for a decent attempt and the standard extra challenge of using all of them 😀

But above all Have Fun!

“Well…at the moment I’m making some milo.”

And finally because this is the ‘love month’ as some call it, what would your character’s perfect date be?

As always try for at least 500 words for a decent attempt,

End of Year Writing Prompt 2013

Posted on Updated on

Firstly apologies to those of you not doing NaNoWriMo who missed the writing prompt last month. Being one of the Municipal Liaisons is a little intense and I completely forgot about this…
Sorry!

So instead of a November and December Writing prompt I will give you an early “End of Year” Writing prompt, Christmas and New Years is a busy time for people and writing is often the thing that gets put aside in an attempt to get everything done.

Instead of posting pictures today I have something even better, the following are links to two pages of photos entered into the National Geographic Photo Contest 2013
http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2013/11/national-geographic-photo-contest-2013/100629/
http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2013/11/national-geographic-photo-contest-2013-part-ii/100636/

Everyone should find something inspiring in there I hope!

A World Building exercise:
What do the people in your world do in Midwinter to cheer themselves through the longest night of the year?
It may help to look up some of the ancient traditions of Mid-Winter Festivals (from before electric lighting!)

Conversely what do they do on the shortest night of the year? Are the two related at all?

Finally a double length word list:

  • Sink
  • Bag
  • Hour
  • Miss
  • Raise
  • Cold
  • Understand
  • Light
  • Now
  • Promise
  • Dust
  • Dark
  • Lovely
  • Chord
  • Reaction
  • Remember
  • Please
  • Voice
  • Wake
  • Welcome

If you get time to write, go you! If not then enjoy the holidays!
Once my brain recovers fully from NaNo, then Christmas I will get back to doing these regularly

October Writing Prompt

Posted on Updated on

Hi all,

I promised I wouldn’t forget and here I am, not forgetting 😛

So this month is Nano Prep Month, I don’t want to interfere with that so I will attempt to theme everything so you can use it for Nano Prep… We’ll see how I go…

I won’t skimp on the pictures because I know some of you like them more than other types of prompts. So here is some scenery for you.

October 2013 (2) Oct 2013 (1)

If this is not the scenery used in your world then perhaps they are paintings your character is viewing?  If it is then does your character see this sort of scenery in your novel?
(Once again the pictures are from http://www.goodfon.com)

Because I haven’t done them for a while a word list!

  • Shadow
  • Waste
  • Down
  • City
  • Yeah
  • Whatever
  • Live
  • Juice
  • Belong
  • Unite

If you aren’t using this for Nano prep then the idea is to use all of these words.
If you are then try imagining what sort of circumstances your character might use these words in.

Finally a world building challenge:
Most cultures have holidays specific to celebrating children, does yours? (If not then what was your character’s favourite day as a child?)
What activities were specific to this celebration? (or what made that day so special in your character’s memory?)

That’s all from me today, I will see some of you at the meeting tonight, the rest of you enjoy your Nano Prep (or October)!

As always try to get at least 500 words for a decent attempt.

Bonus points for people combining all of the parts of the prompt.

I promise I won’t forget next time!

July Writing Prompt

Posted on Updated on

So you will notice that there wasn’t one of these last month. I could say that it was because I wanted to move the month title to the month I posted these rather than the month that they ‘ended’ (not that they really end as such…). But that would be a blatant lie. The truth is I completely forgot… So the prompts will now have the correct month on them and I will give you a double lot to apologise once again for forgetting…

So first the pictures:
Quinta da Regaleira-Sintra, Portugal
Quinta da Regaleira-Sintra, in Portugal

Reflections
This image is not mine! I just think it is absolutely amazing.

This is “Reflections” by Cris Ortega – go look up more of his work here: http://www.crisortega.com/

A starting line:

It was a dark and stormy night… Again. John swore that if they didn’t pass the Anti-Weather Magic Act soon he was going to do something that only the witch down the road would regret.

Some Dialogue:

“You’re nuts! Screw that – your whole family’s nuts!”
“Well we’re part pecan from my mom’s side and part pistachio from my dad’s. And I have a half-brother who’s part peanut but he’s a legume so I don’t think he really counts.”

A line:

The last time you said ‘hmm’, we got arrested, so I think I reserve the right to know why you’re going ‘hmm’.”

And finally A challenge:

Describe your characters physical appearance without using a mirror or blatantly stating eye colour hair colour etc.

As always try to aim for at least 500 words for a decent attempt.

Try using more than one for a harder challenge, or all of them for a fiendish one!

But above all Have Fun!
