Take off Your Pants
Libbie Hawker
Recommended by: Kura Carpenter, Beaulah Pragg
Details an outlining method for people who are traditionally Pantsers. The aim being this method makes Pantsers more productive, without stifling their creative approach to discovery-style story creation.
Master Lists for Writers
Bryn Donovan
Recommended by: Judy Mohr
Exactly what the title says: a collection of lists (e.g scents for settings; reasons to move to a new town; 500 words for action scenes; 500 words for sex scenes; ways people say “Hello”; ways to vocalize negative feelings; names from the Wild West; names of eye colors; etc) The book has no writing tips or anything related. It is purely lists for plot twists, writing prompts, character traits and the like.
No Plot, No Problem
Chris Baty
Recommended by: Em Lowe
For any aspiring novelist, or fellow Wrimo, this book is an absolute must. This year will be my fourth NaNo and if I’m completely honest, it’s become one of those must go back and read again books. I find Baty’s no-nonsense approach to the ‘Novel in a Month’ theory refreshing and inspiring. Particularly given the growth of NaNoWriMo in recent years. The book is broken down into sections that are informative, whilst also taking away from the focus on planning novels so that it can work for Pantsers too.
I Give You My Body
Diana Gabaldon
Recommended by: Em Lowe
Diana Gabaldon, internationally renowned for her Outlander series, wrote this book, and I can honestly say, it’s proven to be an enlightening read. Not only does she include the ‘door tight shut’ love scene, in which the innuendo, or the hints at what happens behind that closed door are as hot as it gets. But she works through the entire spectrum, offering word lists, examples of her own scenes taken from the Outlander series, and recommendations of other texts. If you’re struggling with a sex scene, whether it’s mild, or red hot, this is an absolute must for any writer.

How to Perfect Your Submission
Scott Pack
Recommended by: Judy Mohr
It’s actually a funny book, but it makes you sit long and hard about whether the traditional path is the one for you. He’s brutally honest about what the industry is really like.
